How Does Life Coaching Work?

The Format

The descriptions below provide a general idea how we will work together, though we will always make room for anything important that may pop up. For example, we may be focused on a given goal but when something pops up that needs to be addressed before it takes you off track, we will make space to keep you progressing.

We will work through the following three major phases, then repeat each time we set new goals (but condensed each time since we will already have established a strong base of trust and rapport):

Complimentary Consultation

Generally conducted via telephone, this free 30 minte session is designed to check for fit and feel. It is important to determine whether our styles and expectations match. I will openly share whether I feel the match is conducive to your goals and will offer referrals if I believe you would be better served by another professional. During this conversation, we will also lay out your preliminary goals and identify some of your key strengths and assets.

enVisioning Session

I block off 2 hours for the initial “enVisioning Session” to allow time to really dig in, get to know each other at a deeper level and nail down some initial plans. This is primarily where the Vision & Exploration Phase occurs, but like any recursive process, we may revisit this throughout our work together.

Action & Implementation

Following the enVisioning Session, I allow you the flexibility to use your time in a way that best fits your needs. We put systems in place and determine how to best utilize coaching supports. Not including the enVisioning Session, your monthly subscription provides you up to 4 1/2 hours of coaching support per month. Some examples include:

  •  (4-5) 1 hour weekly sessions in person or via video conference/phone.
  • (1) 4 1/2 session to complete an important project.
  •  (20) 10-15 minute daily phone/video conference/text message check-ins.
  • (2) 2 1/4 hour sessions per month.
  • Any combination of the above or something else that makes sense to your situation (most people choose weekly, but don’t let that constrain you).

Vision & Exploration Phase

  1. enLīven and Discover: During this phase, you will lay out your short term goals as you currently understand them and set some preliminary action plans to energize the process.
  2.  Setting the Foundation: Personal Values are your guiding principles, whether they are clearly understood or not. You will gain greater clarity in these principles and better understand mindset and other personal assets through in-session assessments.
  3. enVisioning and Momentum: We will develop a long-term vision and set monthly benchmarks to create inertia.

Systems & Strategy Phase

  1. Strategizing: Once you are clear on the desired outcomes for our coaching, we will create a high-level strategy for the outcomes you will achieve.
  2. Prioritization and Milestones: Once you are clear about what you are looking to achieve for the next three to six months, we will prioritize what is most important from session-to-session, and look toward where you should focus your attention next.
  3. Support Systems: We will brainstorm who will be critical to have on your team (the people you surround yourself with are vital to your success), and what other resources you may need to sustain your ongoing development.

Action & Implementation Phase

  1.  Digging In: You will be trying things out, testing ideas and making things happen. This is where all the vision and big ideas really get road-tested, and we will check-in frequently to ensure that you feel great about the direction you’re heading and the progress you are making. Sometimes, this is where internal, subconscious resistance rears up. If it does, know that it is normal, but also know that you need to be open about it and buckle down to work through it to create a new normal.
  2. Survive, Celebrate and Thrive: When challenges arise (and if you’re really challenging yourself, they should and will) we make a plan on how to work through them, and you will continue to move through the obstacles that may have stopped you in the past. We will determine when it makes sense to pivot, course correct or keep charging ahead. 
  3. Future Planning: We periodically revisit your long-term strategy and cue up the next set of major milestones. We will review what we have accomplished so far, and look for any learning or systems optimization that we can implement for the next round of life projects.
